Welcome to Race to Git Gud, where I’ll be dragging myself through FromSoftware’s legendary catalog with the grace of a slightly-above-average gamer. Today we start where it all began—with the granddaddy of pain itself: Dark Souls.
A New Game, An Old Trauma
I’m playing the Remastered version on PS5—not out of nostalgia, but survival. I still have my original Xbox 360 disc from college, but I’m not trying to load into Blighttown at 12 FPS. I want the full masochistic experience—just smoother.
Booting it up, that iconic Dark Souls logo hit me like a PTSD trigger, followed by the signature clang of metal that basically screams: “Welcome back. You will die.”
The Legend of Meep Geese Begins Again
That’s right—Meep Geese has returned. Fresh off barely surviving Shadow of the Erdtree, he’s back in Lordran and probably still hasn’t processed any of it.
Step one? The real first boss: character customization.
I chose Bandit class (you’ll see why soon), and for my gift, I picked the Pendant—because I like lying to myself. And also because “useless” sounds a lot like “secretly important,” right?
Then came the sliders.
Dark Souls’ customization engine is like sculpting facial features with a chainsaw. You can either make an elegant character… or something that looks like a wax statue that’s been left out in the sun.
Naturally, I hit the randomize button five times, until I got something that looked like he files taxes and eats plain oatmeal. It’s not beautiful, but it’s Meep.
Back to the Fog
With Meep born, I took my first slow, nervous steps into Lordran—the place where all Git Gud stories either start or end.
There are no major fights yet. No grand victories. Just that first buzz of dread, anticipation, and a UI that hasn’t changed in over a decade.
It’s like coming home, if home was full of skeletons and bottomless pits.
