Welcome to Chillers, the ongoing series where we take a look at songs that give me goosebumps. Bi-weekly posting will be done on WordPress with a cross post to Bluesky.
Sunshine Superman by Donovan may be the essential 60s anthem, fitting right in place in the background of a Scooby-Doo chase scene. The funky guitars by Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, in tandem with the playful lyricism of Donovan, draped the pastel and paisley background of the hippie movement.
It’s an enjoyable listening experience built on love, optimism, and the carefree spirit of the time. Missing are the heavy philosophical questions or cosmic existentialism of other 60s tracks—here, we just get a simple story about a man living his life.
It’s the kind of song you’d hear lying under a tree, one leg over the other, bopping your foot to the beat as the world spins on.
