One of the best examples of a Jekyll and Hyde in a musical setting, Kid Rock teamed up with Sheryl Crow to perform a very simplistic and heartfelt piece titled “Picture.” The setting is a conversation across time and space between ex-lovers. It’s never really conveyed why there is this gap between them, but there is a longing here. Despite having moved on to different partners in a physical sense, the artists continually move backward toward this past love.

There are two versions of grief at play here: the man’s self-destructive tendencies and the woman’s more reserved sadness. They both acknowledge that they need each other in some semblance, but there is a lack of conversation and confirmation from both parties. That is, until the very end of the song, when the door is finally opened and there is an attempt at remedying this damaged relationship.

It’s a weird mental dichotomy to have a song that makes you feel this deep sense of love coming from the gaping maw of Kid Rock, but sometimes even a broken clock is right.
